Peter Skidmore's Publications

1. INTRODUCTION
An attempt at collating staff output at Doncaster Museum & Art Gallery has been completed in a preliminary way for the Natural Sciences department there, embracing work done both within the museum and beyond. In this context, titles by Peter Skidmore, former Keeper of Natural Sciences, were originally collated by Colin Howes, former Environmental Records Officer, and posted on the Doncaster Museum Service website. Following Peter’s death in 2009, a copy of his curriculum vitae was made available to Martin Limbert by Paul Buckland. Subsequently, an interim bibliography was placed on the website of the Thorne & Hatfield Moors Conservation Forum, alongside biographical information about Peter. Anyone visiting the website was invited to offer corrections and additions to the bibliography, to make subsequent versions as accurate and complete as possible. In parallel, work was undertaken, with the assistance of Paul Buckland, to improve the content and scope of the bibliography. The present version was completed on 13 October 2010.

The known citations listed here number [200], and can be broadly divided into six:
1. Published work
2. Unpublished work within the span 1952-94
3. Consultancy reports 1995-2004, many of them unpublished
4. Two theses
5. Other titles
6. Web-based reference

Seven comments arise from this listing:
1. The citations of published items are included under the year given in the publication, which occasionally deviates from the year of actual publication.
2. Irrespective of the originals, all titles are given in lower case except where otherwise necessary.
3. Under 2, excluded - as probably impossible to ascertain in full – are Peter Skidmore’s unpublished typescript/duplicated reports following targeted fieldwork, including that associated with courses for the Field Studies Council. These detailed reports were undertaken for several organizations, but were not listed by Peter in his cv, and their extent remains unknown. Nor is it known if any were ever issued as more formal reports subsequently. Several examples are given here:
a) Preliminary list of insects collected in the Conway river catchment, May 1969
b) Report on the field entomology course held at the Draper’s Field Centre, Rhyd-y-Creuau, Betws-y-Coed, Caernarvonshire from August 12-19th, 1970
c) Preliminary notes on Diptera attracted to light trap at Muston [1978]
d) List of Diptera collected on Durham Naturalists’ Trust sites during 1981
e) (with J.T. Burn) A survey of various sites in Pembroke 7-12 August 1983
f) Report on an entomological survey of various sites in Argyll in late October 1986
4. The consultancy reports given under 3 above were listed, but inadequately, by Peter in his cv. Some are here merely given bullet-points to indicate that they are entered in a tentative way. For some, the exact year has not been ascertained with certainty, and these are marked accordingly. Such unpublished reports, so called ‘grey literature’, are publicly available to those commissioning them, but are often difficult for the bibliographer and researcher to trace or access.
5. All items included in 1-4 above are included chronologically as a consolidated bibliography. However, under 5, any remaining items are listed separately. Peter’s surviving notebooks and correspondence are excluded here.
6. Work undertaken by Peter, but merely acknowledged in print, and not published directly under his name, is not included.
7. The possibility of any articles published in newspapers has not been pursued. However, although not directly relevant, Peter did appear in several local press features (e.g. Doncaster Evening Post 6 October 1980; Doncaster Star 17 December 1994, 1 August 1995).

2. BIOGRAPHICAL AND BIBLIOGRAPHICAL SOURCES DATED 2010
