Maps

The OS maps covering the area of the moors unfortunately lack many of the place and area names which are in common usage, and are used in recording. Two maps are therefore being prepared to address the situation.

Many thanks to Natural England for providing outline maps on the Moors on an OS background, and for allowing the Forum to publish them under their licence. The maps are based upon Ordnance Survey material with the permission of OS on behalf of the Controller of HMSO (c) Crown Copyright Licence No. 100046223. 2008
Thanks to Martin Limbert for his research on the Thorne Moors names, for providing a draft map and for his assistance in preparing and checking the Thorne Moors Map.

In order to be able to zoom in and pan around the maps, and to associate the maps with overhead photographs I have used the Google Maps interface and Microsoft Mapcruncher. The maps will open in a separate full screen window, please use the panels displayed in the top right and top left of the maps to navigate and zoom.

You can also hold down the left mouse button to drag the map across the screen instead of the 4-way navigate button on-screen. Similarly you can use the mouse wheel to zoom in and out.

Note that the Moors Maps will not zoom in to such a high level as the Google Maps backdrop (due to size restrictions). If this happens zoom in again and the Moors Map will reappear.

The Hatfield Moors Map is available to purchase as a double-sided A3 document.
