The Moors

Location of Thorne and Hatfield Moors

This overhead image shows clearly the location of the Thorne and Hatfield Moors, both showing up as dark brown surrounded by large fields. Thorne Moors are to the north of the M180, Hatfield Moors to the south. The A18, the Doncaster to Scunthorpe railway and the Stainforth Keadby canal also pass through the arable area between the two moors, together forming a fairly effective barrier for all but the most determined wildlife.

Since this image (courtesy of Google Maps) was taken peat milling has almost ceased and there has been rewetting of the bare peat and some recolonisation by sedges.

The regeneration of both Moors is the responsibility of Natural England.
