9 Kalmia on Thorne Moor
Sheep-Laurel Kalmia angustifolia is a North American plant which was introduced to Thorne Moor in the 19th century by William Casson as part of a horticultural enterprise. The main legacy from this business was the Rhododendrens which are very invasive in the drier areas. Surprisingly Kalmia, which is equally invasive in its natural habitat, has proved highly sedentary, with only 3 small stands. This gallery shows a selection of images taken over the last 30 years. Martin Limbert has written a Technical Report about Kalmia on Thorne Moor.

Flickr Group

We have set up a Flickr group called Thorne and Hatfield Moors Conservation Forum. Flickr is a photograph sharing website. We hope that this new group will develop into a valuable source for identification of plant and animal wildlife on the moors. If you have good photos of named species please add them to the group. If you are not already a member of Flickr you can sign up to Flickr (there is a free option which is perfectly adequate), upload the photos to your account, and then add them to our group.
