In recent years, a desktop review has been undertaken of all vertebrate classes on Thorne Moors. Already, two Technical Reports describing the cold-blooded vertebrates and mammals have been produced. Each includes a comprehensive bibliography. Now, the review of the birds is complete, with the present Technical Report being the second of two ornithological reports. The first report (TR18) provides a bibliography of the Thorne Moors avifauna, citing items dating from 1586 to 2009. The second report (TR19) gives an annotated checklist of the birds from observations over the same period.
‘The Birds of Thorne Moors. An Annotated Checklist’ presents information partly codified and partly written in full. Within the limited remit of a modern format Technical Report, no more expansive treatment of all the avian species is feasible. However, the status codes devised by Bryan Wainwright summarise much information in an accurate and extremely succinct way. Status codes will never win literary prizes, but examining them alongside the explanation of the system will give a useful overview and should answer many queries. The moorland and contiguous areas like Thorne Colliery are treated as a single unit, and the individual species accounts give basic facts from the data available. There is no information on how each species uses the habitats, just an outline of its overall occurrence. However each species entry is divided into three time bands (pre-1990, 1990-1999, 2000-2009), to inject greater refinement and topicality.
